Tom Hanks Ocean Index
By Jimmy Chen
Apollo 13 (1995)
Ocean sequence: Tom Hanks just spent a week in space thinking he was going to die; miraculously, with the help of NASA, he and his team are able to “latch on” to gravity and get pulled (at meteorite speeds) to earth, landing in the ocean. At this point, no one knows if they are alive inside the pod, given the extreme temperature and pressure changes. After nail-biting silence, Tom Hanks opens the door and waves, a hero.
Relationship with ocean: Gratitude
Estimated time: 2-3 “nail-biting” minutes
Metaphor(s): (None, treated literally)
